Is A Career in Medicine A Faustian Bargain?

A Faustian Bargain is a metaphorical deal where a person sacrifices something of great value, usually themselves, for worldly gain, career success, knowledge, or wealth.
Many physicians burn out in medicine. Which begs the question: Is a career in this field a Faustian Bargain; must you sacrifice yourself to make it?
This question is all the more important in light of the many paths young people can take today. Social media show cases a thousand different career paths and lifestyles. It's easy to jump from chasing one to the next.
The reality is, if you choose not to give your life to something meaningful--to go all in on one chosen pursuit--you will by default give your life to something else.
Your time goes somewhere whether you are intentional about it or not. The quickest way to fail at life is to jump from one pursuit to the next. Great things take time and sacrifice. To not sacrifice for something is to fail by default.
A career in medicine will push, test, and tax you, but you have within it the opportunity to save lives--perhaps one of the most meaningful things you can give your life to. How many other pursuits are as noble?
This isn't to say you must not make yourself whole. You must always attend to other aspects of your life. Without doing so, you will not have the support and nourishment to succeed for very long.
In order not to lose yourself to medicine, you must be intentional, deliberate, strategic, and recognize that few paths are as meaningful and rewarding.
An individual grows with the greatness of their task. Aim high. Aspire for more. You can do nearly impossible things!
