University of Oxford Summer

What are the ingredients necessary to form a culture that consistently develops successful individuals? Is it an institutions’ traditions? Is it only a product of their high standards and vetting process? Is it their systems and methods? Is it their level of collective talent?

The search for the answers to these questions took me to The University of Oxford as a visiting student. I wanted to understand how Oxford consistently produced students who were prolific and left a deep impact in their field and on the world.

Oxford boasts of secret passageways, winding staircases, and almost ancient libraries who's staff are on a mission to collect every book in the world. It is a place of knowledge, wisdom, and the quest for improving humanity. Tradition is everywhere. Oxford's bricks, walls, and streets whisper of how they witnessed the early years of great individuals of history. Its sunrises and sunsets level you and make you wonder.

Oxford is an international city where you meet people from all over the world, all of whom are brilliant and are hungry to learn.

Central to Oxford’s teaching model is the system known as “Tutorials.” Oxford students meet in small groups of two or three students weekly to have conversations between them and their tutors. Their tutor is typically an expert on the subject or topic.

A tutorial relies on the exchange of ideas so you need to be ready to present and defend your opinions and your understanding, accept constructive criticism and listen to others. Such regular and rigorous academic discussion develops and facilitates learning in a way that just isn't possible through lectures alone.

By inviting students to present their understanding of the course material to expert tutors, gaps in their understanding can be identified and remedied. This Ph.D. style dissertation model develops remarkable thinkers.
